2020 – My Photographic Journey through an Isolating Year

“In 2020, I found balance and inspiration by walking miles daily around New York City and its environs, camera in hand. This book chronicles some of these journeys from March through December — a time of lockdowns and social distancing — which enabled me to change my perspective and use creativity and art as a way to deal with life during the Covid-19 Pandemic.”

Sheryl Checkman is an award-winning graphic designer who lives in New York City.

In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang represent two opposing yet complementary forces, or energies that are said to be found in nature. One cannot exist without the other. Together, they create balance. This became the inspiration for Life is Balance®, her line of sport and leisure- themed apparel (lifeisbalance.com).

Sheryl brings balance to her own life through her creativity and her active pursuit of sports and yoga. In addition to running a successful design business, Sheryl increasingly devotes time to fine art photography on land as well as underwater, where she combines her love of nature with her artist’s eye for beauty. The resulting home decor, accessories, canvas wraps and photographic fine art prints can be found on Etsy (lifeisbalance.etsy.com).

Sheryl graduated from Cornell University, studied design at the University of Copenhagen, and attended a Master’s program in Communications Design at Pratt Institute. She is also a graduate of New York City’s famed High School of Music & Art. Sheryl is an avid skier, scuba diver and advanced yoga practitioner. She loves to hike and take long walks, and is rarely without her camera.
